The Uggot That Got Away

Once upon a time, ijaaay Kiangan Village, faaar, far away, there lived a happy sayote. She was loved by everybody in that place called Philex. And she was in everybody's menu ta kwa- naimas. Sayote with extra rice, sayote with corned beef, tortang sayote, sayote caprese salad with pesto sauce, sayote with pasta con pomodoro e basilico, or just the plain boiled uggot ti sayote with bagoong dip. Imas!

For years, sayote was a favorite. But, the people ngay became umay with sayote. At first ngay ket, there were a few who didn't let go of preparing sayote for their meals. Say for example, Taraki boy. He was a fan of sayote. Every day, with three meals each, adi pay he had sayote.

When everyone else gave up on eating sayote, it was only Taraki boy who was left. Taraki boy held on tight.. like an uggot that struggled to cling on to the mighty alambre. With closed eyes and an open heart, it clings- even when the sayote didn't taste like the same sayote he loved before. The uggot clings adi with all its twists and curls. They only had each other- Taraki boy ken jay sayote.

One foggy morning, Taraki boy woke up telling himself, "why adi am I still eating sayote ket there are a lot of other dishes I can eat?". The tiny uggot, upon hearing this from Taraki boy, got devastated adi. Ta even when the tiny uggot stretched its curls from kannawan to kannigid piman ket it tried to hold on. At this point, the tiny uggot felt like it had lost its consciousness, in the vastness of the empty space.. thinking that Taraki boy and the sayote were in a parallel universe all along. They were not meant to be- ta kwa.

The sayote and Taraki boy went on their own ways. In the evening, when everything was quiet, with the sound of sibbawengs in the background, Taraki boy would sometimes look back at the love he had for the sayote. The thought of her would sometimes float in the middle of the lonely night. He would say, "ah-ahh, I think I miss sayote and how happy I was nu isawsaw ko suna ti bagoong..", but, it was too late already ta maybe, they were in a circumstance nga they really were not meant to be piman. To Taraki boy, she was the sayote with the uggot that got away...
